In Catholic theology, we are called to love God with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30). This commandment emphasizes the integral connection between our spiritual and physical well-being. Far from being separate spheres, our faith and wellness are deeply intertwined, as caring for our bodies honors the Creator who fashioned us in His image.

St. Paul reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). Just as we wouldn’t neglect or harm a sacred space, we are called to steward our physical health with the same reverence. Eating nutritious foods, engaging in regular exercise, getting adequate sleep, and managing stress are ways we honor God with our strength and sustain the energy needed to serve others.
Moreover, wellness aids our spiritual journey by sharpening our minds and hearts for prayer, worship, and service. When we neglect our health, it can hinder our ability to fully engage with God and others. Conversely, a well-nourished, active body can support a vibrant prayer life and a greater capacity to fulfill our vocations, whether as parents, clergy, or friends.
Wellness also reflects a deeper theological truth: our hope in the resurrection. The care we give our earthly bodies mirrors the care God promises in restoring and glorifying them at the end of time. Through wellness, we express gratitude for the gift of life and align our daily habits with our ultimate hope in Christ.
By integrating wellness into our Catholic journey, we embody the call to holiness in every dimension of our lives. Wellness is not self-indulgence; it is stewardship, a way to glorify God and prepare ourselves to do His will with joy and vitality. As we care for our bodies, we deepen our capacity to serve Him and others with love.
